A Personal Ghost Story...

The last day of October has arrived, and so has Halloween! And, I just couldn't let the day pass without leaving you all something spooky. After all, it is the time for pumpkins carved with eerie faces, witches, vampires, goblins and ghosts...

During my "Spirit of the Knight" book tour, I shared a personal ghost story at the request of my lovely hostess (You can read it here: Brooke Blog'sand since that time, some of you have asked me for another. Now do be aware, I really don't have that many. I mean, it's not like I run into ghosts on a regular basis.

However...

On a dark and stormy night...no, no, that's not right...

Actually, the noon hour had just passed and there wasn't so much as a single cloud in the sky as far as I could tell. My beloved mother was in the hospital and had just been served her lunch. They brought the usual bland, yucky fare and even though she was not restricted as far as diet was concerned, they didn't think to include salt, pepper or salad dressing. My sister and I said not to worry, we would just go down and get some from the cafeteria. So we did. While we were there, we bought a sandwich, some fruit, and a drink for ourselves. As you can imagine, our hands were full.

Our steps were slow and careful, so as not to spill our drinks as we made our way back to the elevator. Along the way, a  tall man, with a slender build, dressed in a white shirt and dark-colored pants, zoomed around us. He arrived at the elevator ahead of us, and because he seemed to be in such a big hurry, we slowed our steps even more so as to give him plenty of time to hit the door button and get to wherever he wanted to go before we got there.

The elevator doors closed and only then did my sister and I approach the doors. We waited but the elevator didn't move. We waited a bit longer, and still the elevator showed that it was on the ground floor. We looked at each other and shrugged. I went ahead and pushed the up button and the doors opened. I opened my mouth to apologize to the man who was in such a rush, only to discover the elevator was empty. The man had simply disappeared into thin air. I looked at my sister who had gasped and then with a look of horror shining clearly in her eyes, she said, "did you just see a man go in there. or...?"

I said, "Yes, I did. Can you tell me what he looked like?"

She described the man's hair color, height, build, and clothing exactly the way I saw him myself. Yup...creepy.

In addition to this creepiness, shortly after we arrived (and yes, after a bit of debate we did take the elevator to the 4th floor) an alarm accompanied by flickering lights prompted the nurses to close all of the patient doors. When we asked why they were doing that, they said it was just a drill. Now, before all of this happened, my mother asked for a blanket (poor thing just couldn't get warm) that never arrived. More than thirty minutes later, and with lights and alarms still going, my sister marched outside to ask for the blanket they promised to bring. As she stepped into the hall, she encountered two men from a mortuary, transporting a bag-covered body, out of the room next to hers.

A connection? I just don't know. So, I'll let you be the judge!

Happy Halloween everybody!

  1. I'm late discovering this Halloweenish story, but what a tale. I have goosebumps! That is just too crazy weird and spooky. I've been in a nursing home where they go through and close all the doors in order to remove someone who has passed. That alone is eerie in itself, but connecting that with the guy in the elevator....I definitely think you had some kind of unusual/ghostly encounter!

    1. And well remembered to this day. Still, my sister and I have often wondered why a ghost would need the elevator anyway?
